Saturday October 3, 2015 - See how times have changed

On September 14, 2015, I wrote a post about Oak Park High School in Kansas City, voting Landon Patterson their Homecoming Queen. Ms. Patterson is transgender.

Since then, she has received some nasty comments and tweets from certain people in the community.

Yesterday, Friday October 2nd a rally for those protesting Ms. Patterson as Homecoming Queen was planned.

Not only was there a protest rally, but a counter pro Landon rally occurred.

This TV news story is from Thursday night.
Before the Friday anti-Landon rally.

This TV news story is from after the Friday rally.

  1. Perhaps this is as straight-forward as seems on the surface and that the student body admires the courage and determination of this young girl. Perhaps they have a heightened sense if equality and want to express it through their choice of homecoming queen. But in the back of mind I can't dismiss the notion that they are simply thumbing their nose at the system and using this girl for less than honorable reasons. What do you think?

  2. I agree with you. Most social changes start with the youth as part of their rebellion against the system. For Baby Boomers is was civil rights for both African Americans and women.

However, I do not believe its for less honorable reasons. This generation only knows life with the internet which allows them to reach the world for anything in seconds and have global friends. I think to them diversity expected and accepted.
